Animation lovers and aspiring filmmakers have another edition to look forward to as Animatex returns to Cairo in 2027. The seventh edition is scheduled to take place from February 3 to 6, with submissions already open for filmmakers interested in competing. The festival is expected to bring together screenings, workshops, talks, and industry activities celebrating animation from Egypt and around the world.
What to Expect
Animatex goes beyond film screenings, creating a space where animators, students, studios, and audiences can connect. Previous editions have featured workshops, discussions, masterclasses, exhibitions, networking opportunities, and industry sessions. The 2026 edition also welcomed international and Egyptian animation professionals, giving attendees the opportunity to learn from experienced creators.

If you want to submit an animated film to the 2027 competition, entries are being accepted through FilmFreeway. The submission deadline is October 15, 2026, and the call is open to filmmakers from Egypt and around the world. You can register here.
The Competition Categories
The 2027 competition includes eight categories: Best International Film, Best Arab Film, Best Arab Student Film, Best Commissioned Film, Best Children Film, Best Egyptian Film, Best Feature Film, and Best Music Film. This range allows different types of animation and creators to compete for recognition.

Since launching in 2020, Animatex has grown into an annual meeting point for Egypt’s animation community. Its editions have brought together freelancers, students, studios, academics, and audiences through screenings, talks, workshops, and networking activities. The 2026 edition also celebrated 90 years of Egyptian animation.
Who Can Participate?
For the 2027 competition, films must have been produced on or after January 1, 2025. They must run for at least one minute and no more than 30 minutes, excluding credits, with more than 50% of their total duration consisting of animation. Films previously submitted to Animatex cannot be entered again.
