Celebrities are always on the radar, and their actions, whether good deeds or unwelcomed activities, are viewed and judged by the public. When a star starts to lose it and does illegal or immoral acts, such as committing assault of any kind, their entire persona can get cancelled by the hordes of fans who previously supported them. And honestly, we’re not against that—this should happen! Let us elaborate by walking you through some examples of national and international celebs and the actions that got them cancelled.

Domestic Violence: Johnny Depp VS Cheb Khaled

Johnny Depp was (and continues to be, depending on your persuasion) one of Hollywood’s most iconic actors. His entire career was nothing but successful until his ex-wife, Amber Heard, sought a restraining order against him in 2016.

Even though the domestic violence allegations were denied by Depp, his life has turned upside down, and his most recent movies have been highly frowned upon by the masses!

Regarding Cheb Khaled, the case is a bit different. In case you didn’t know, in his biography Khaled: Behind the Smile, the Algerian star Cheb Khalid mentioned that his ex-wife filed a complaint against him for domestic violence around 25 years ago.

As an Arab superstar and one of Egypt’s most beloved singers, why was his fame untouched? Not only was the matter covered properly by the media, but also his songs are, to this day, hits that are played by millions around the globe as if nothing happened!

Sexual Assaults: Tameem Youness VS Kevin Spacey

The well-known actor Kevin Spacey had a number of allegations of sexual misconduct by many male victims, some of whom claim they were underage at the time of the assaults. This resulted in Spacey’s removal from his blockbuster series House of Cards, and the movie he was shooting, All the Money in the World, was reshot with another actor! This is how serious things can get in the US.

In Egypt, we have all heard the controversial allegations made by Tameem Youness’s ex-wife, Nada Adel, in which she accused him of marital rape. However, she didn’t press any charges, as this crime is, unfortunately, not yet criminalised in Egypt.

In his infamous Instagram Stories last year, Youness denied everything, flip-flopping between saying this wasn’t even a crime and saying that this happened a long time ago. Yet, these strong allegations didn’t survive a day in the sun, and his career carried on peacefully with his newest song trending!

Is there bias in the cancel culture in Egypt?

Via Nile FM

We have all noticed the gravity of celebrity criminal or immoral acts and the measures taken against them when it comes to their careers and popularity, not the legal aspect. But where is that when it comes to ‘cancelled’ Egyptian (and Arab) celebrities and their careers that seemingly go untouched?

There is another thing we noticed, and it’s not pretty. Female celebrities struggle more in Egypt if they cross the line. Case in point, the actress Zeina went through her whole tangled situation with actor Ahmed Eizz, but she’s still somehow the only one who’s defamed by the matter—unlike Ahmed Eizz himself, whose career actually flourished! With all honesty, the whole thing sounds unjust.
