While the Egyptian film industry is no stranger to box-office triumphs, unfortunately, several productions failed to recoup their production costs, highlighting challenges in marketing, distribution, or even storytelling.
The underperformance of these films underscores several recurring issues. Many films lacked robust promotional campaigns, leading to poor awareness among potential audiences. Other releases clashed with better-publicised projects or were poorly timed for their target demographic. Also, over-reliance on spin-offs or similar formulas led to audience fatigue.
Here, we spotlight the 2024 films that failed to reach the one-million-pound mark at the box office:
Leih Te3esha Lewahdak? (407,414 EGP)
Starring acclaimed actors Sherif Mounir and Khaled El-Sawy, this film was expected to be a hit. The film, which follows the journey of a doctor supporting his cancer-stricken friend, received critical praise for its heartfelt narrative. However, it didn’t garner enough in theatres. Its redemption came through streaming, finding a broader audience when it got streamed on Shahid.
Wa2t Edafy (608,746 EGP)
Returning to this list is Khaled El-Sawy, alongside Amr Abdel Gelil and Basem Samra. This film is about three con men aiming for a quick fortune which fell short of expectations. A lack of promotional efforts and sudden release contributed to its underwhelming box office performance.
Ben2adar Zorofak (705,799 EGP)
Ahmed El Fishawy, known for his consistent box-office appeal, faced disappointment with this project. Despite his talent and fan base, the film failed both artistically and commercially, which was devastating since he passed on the third instalment of the hit Welad Rizk for it.
Adel Mesh Adel (801,589 EGP)
In another setback for Ahmed El Fishawy, this ensemble cast, including Sherry Adel and Mahmoud El-Bezawy, failed to connect with audiences. The film’s mediocre comedy returns hinted at deeper issues with its execution.
Leilet El Eid (635,933 EGP)
Produced by the established El Sobky Company and featuring an ensemble cast, this film had all the ingredients for success. However, poor timing, multiple delays, and insufficient advertising undermined its performance.
El Maleka (455,749 EGP)
This film attempted to capitalise on Hala Sedki’s beloved character from Ga3far El Omda. Despite a star-studded cast and the direction of Sameh Abdel Aziz, the movie achieved less than half a million pounds. The resemblance to its predecessor may have alienated audiences expecting fresher content.
Tani Tani (585,771 EGP)
Featuring comedy giants Ahmed Adam, Bayoumi Fouad, and Ghada Abdel Razek, Tani Tani revolves around a love triangle. However, audiences failed to connect with the plot, leading to modest earnings that belied its star power.
Derwila (581,375 EGP)
With a high-octane mix of action and suspense and a cast including Amr Abdel Gelil and Ayten Amer, Derwila promised much but delivered little. Extensive pre-release advertising failed to generate ticket sales.
Draco-Ra (290,636 EGP)
This collaboration between Khaled Mansour and Shady Alphonse, stemming from their long-standing partnership, was one of the year’s biggest flops. The film, though quirky, failed to attract theatregoers and transitioned swiftly to Yango Play, where it did get the attention it deserved.
