With Kira Wa Al-Ginn coming out this month, it was only natural that we started thinking about the iconic Ahmed Mourad-written characters portrayed in movies. And then we thought about who could play these characters, which led us to imagine what it would be like if these parts were played by Hollywood actors. Undoubtedly, Egyptian actors have brought the best out of these roles, but imagine a remake with the recasting suggestions below?

Oscar Isaac (Taha from Torab El-Mas)

This lacklustre character led a dull life and lived with his disabled father was played by Asser Yassin in the movie released in 2018. We think Taha could be portrayed by Moon Knight’s superstar Oscar Isaac. Wondering why? Because he has a career of many indie movies, in which he played gloomy, depressed characters, and that reminds us of our dear Taha.

Jared Leto (Yehya from Blue Elephant)

One of Hollywood’s most skilful method actors, the chameleon Jared Leto has portrayed all kinds of dramatic roles from the Joker to a superhero vampire—he can do it all! Yehya was brought to life by Egypt’s sweetheart Karim Abdel-Aziz, shocking everyone with his performance at that time. We have never seen Abdel-Aziz looking this downcast in any role before, but we can definitely imagine Jared Leto with his piercing blue eyes going for a depression beard for this character. However, we don’t think Jared Leto can keep up with the one-liners Karim Abdel-Aziz gave!

Joaquin Phoenix (Sherif from Blue Elephant)

Who can perform a possessed psycho better than Joaquin Phoenix? Our dearest Khaled El-Sawy masterfully played the role of Sherif, but we can imagine it being even scarier with The Joker’s superstar. Joaquin Phoenix excels in complex evil characters, and he goes the extra mile by losing a lot of weight or changing his figure in any way necessary.

Jennifer Lawrence (Farida from Blue Elephant 2)

Hend Sabri brought back the legacy of Khaled El-Sawy in the sequel with her creepy speeches and terrifying movements! We don’t have to think much about why Jennifer Lawrence would definitely be an option with her husky voice and expressive features. You’ve seen how marvellous she was in Silver Linings Playbook, right?

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law (Ahmed Kira and Abdel-Kader El-Ginn)

If you haven’t read 1919, this novel is a thought-provoking information-packed historical fiction representing a significant era in Egypt’s history. It introduced us to Ahmed Kira, a laboratory assistant by day and an assassin that poses as an elegant pimp to lure colonising British officers to their deaths by night. We also meet Abdel-Kader El-Ginn, who supplies British soldiers with alcohol, cigarettes, and cocaine. That is until his father is brutally murdered by colonisers, which is when he becomes consumed with the idea of revenge. So, Kira and El-Ginn join forces, and a patriotic journey begins!

We chose Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law to become this duo as they partnered once in Sherlock Holmes, and they can do it again. The bromance between these two is crazy, and they can definitely pull off the 20th century’s costumes and go along with the political mayhem of the 1919 revolution, following them with some quirky jokes.
