The trend began with the Facebook group “Complaints of Bikini Bottom Residents”. Created in August, the group quickly grew as users started pretending that Bikini Bottom was an actual Egyptian neighbourhood. Within a short time, hundreds of thousands of people had joined the joke.
From Complaints to Comedy
What makes the group particularly funny is how seriously people treat their fictional underwater lives. Members post imaginary complaints about rent, prices, neighbours, work, relationships, restaurants, and everyday inconveniences, while using SpongeBob characters and locations as if they were real. Some posts even resemble the familiar announcements and arguments found in Egyptian neighbourhood groups.
Celebrities Have Moved In Too

The joke quickly escaped the group and reached Egyptian celebrities. Mostafa Gharieb shared an edited picture of himself in Bikini Bottom and jokingly renamed himself “Mostafa Ghareeq”. Bassem Samra and Ahmed Malek also joined the fun, while Hana El Zahed shared her own version of the trend. Their participation helped push the imaginary neighbourhood even further into the mainstream.
A Shortcut Back to Childhood
Part of the trend’s charm comes from how familiar SpongeBob feels. For Egyptians who grew up watching the show, seeing SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, and Mr Krabs again brings back memories of childhood afternoons spent in front of the television. Turning those characters into neighbours makes the nostalgia feel personal and surprisingly relatable.
