The new year kicked off with dozens of new Egyptian movies. And apart from one film, comedies have dominated the screens. But who doesn’t love a good laugh? These five movies are currently being screened all over Egypt’s cinemas and are designed to brighten your day with Mohamed Heneidy’s anticipated comeback and the outbreak of fresh faces. So, without further ado, check out the best Egyptian movie releases of January!

Al Bab Al Akhdar

The film first premiered last year on October 9th in Alexandria’s International Film Festival and was released on Watch It earlier this month. Based on one of the late Osama Anwar Okasha’s manuscripts, the movie takes place in the ’90s and revolves around a single mother’s journey to find the father of her child. The star ensemble directed by Raouf Abdelaziz includes Eyad Nassar, Sahar Al Sayegh, Khaled Al Sawy, Mahmoud Abdel Moghni, and Bayoumi Fouad.

Nabil Al Gamil Akhisa2y Tagmil

Following a young plastic surgeon, played by the not-so-young Mohamed Heneidy, this movie follows the comedic situations the surgeon gets himself into while at his private practice. Directed by Khales Marie and written by Amin Gamal and Mohamed Mahrez, the film features Heneidy alongside Nour, Mohamed Salam, and Rahma Ahmed.

Shalaby

The movie revolves around a marionette doll creator who used to work at a horror house but is now attempting to pursue fame and start his puppet show led by a doll of the titular name. Shalaby aimed to attract children and was a commercial success, ranking right after Heneidy’s comeback film at the box office.

Starring Karim Mahmoud Abdelaziz, Ruby, Bayoumi Fouad, Hatem Salah, and numerous child stars, the movie marks the second collaboration between writer Mustafa Hamdi and director Peter Mimi after last year’s blockbuster Min Agl Ziko.

Akhy Fawk Al Shagara

Alaa, an introvert living a healthy and organised life, finds he has a twin brother named Bahaa. The movie stars Ramez Galal, Nesreen Tafesh, Hamdi Al Marghani, Tara Emad, Bayoumii Fouad, and Mohamed Tharwat.

Al Matareed

After his father’s death, Salah returns to Egypt to receive his inheritance and sell his late father’s properties. But he encounters a football club that gets him into many disasters. In an ensemble of actors, rising stars, influencers, and fresh faces, Ahmed Hatem, Eyad Nassar, and Tara Emad take the lead.

To promote the movie, the cast members showed up to the screenings in a tour bus. Then, similar to the actions of real-life football teams, they hosted an exciting meet-and-greet with the fans.

Etneen Lel Igar

Two unemployed friends who have been unsuccessfully job hunting end up putting themselves up for rent. The film stars Bayoumi Fouad — in his fifth feature in a cast list this month — and Mohamed Tharwat alongside several guest stars, most notably Rania Youssef, Nahed Al Sebaei, and Diab.

Shadi Ali, the film’s director, says the movie includes numerous storylines with every guest star. The movie also marks Esaad Younnis’ comeback to production.
