Muted premiered on Netflix on May 19th and was quickly trending in Egypt. The six-episode miniseries follows Sergio Ciscar, who was imprisoned for murdering his parents as a teenager but is now free. As Sergio has been silent since his capture, a young psychiatrist named Ana Dussel seeks to get to the bottom of his case and prove he is not psychotic.

Arón Piper, a favourite for Elite fans, plays the lead role of Sergio, which has undoubtedly led to the show’s quick popularity. Also featured in the cast are Elite’s Manuel Rios, Cristina Kovani, Almudena Amor, and the legendary Ramiro Blas. So get ready to learn everything there is to know about El Silencio on Netflix — beware, spoilers lie ahead!

1-     Hard-Hitting Themes of Manipulation and Emotional Abuse

via Netflix Life

With episodes focusing on themes of emotional mistreatment, manipulation, social alienation, and self-hatred, Muted is an emotionally taxing drama. So the show might not be the right choice if you’re looking for a light watch.

And yet, how great is Muted? It’s an excellent show that doesn’t stray too far from reality. Because of this, each of the six episodes is more terrifying than the last. While the psychological aspects of most of its episodes are challenging to watch, that’s part of what makes the series so enjoyable.

2-     Captivating Silent Tension Between the Characters

Despite the lack of action and drama, Muted is an exciting show. Ana’s resolve to learn Sergio’s true intentions, combined with the underlying tension between the characters, makes you question everything.

Is Sergio really a psychopath? Is it ethical to track someone’s every move? Should we expect atonement from a convicted felon? Can families get beyond the trauma of murder, no matter how horrible? Muted’s thrill stems from these and many other questions!

3-      An Unexpected Ending (Spoiler Alert)

via Decider

Across Muted’s six episodes, we never know how or why Sergio murdered his parents until he claims that his father threw his mother off the balcony and then jumped after her because he could not face the repercussions of his actions. But things take an unexpected turn when Sergio’s sister, Noa, exposes him as the real killer.

Now that the truth is out and the police are outside his flat looking for him about an unrelated matter, Sergio decides to take his own life rather than reenter incarceration. Or did he?

After spending some quiet time with Ana, the two step out onto the balcony, only for one figure to be pictured jumping to their death shortly after. Whether it was Sergio or Ana who took the fatal fall is ambiguous, yet we think it was the former, leaving the doctor to deal with her grief in silence. This tragic ending sure would befit the characters and the themes of this Spanish must-watch show!
