Hot off his September Emmy win for his lead role in Mr. Robot, Egyptian-American actor, Rami Malek, has been cast to play none other than the legendary Freddie Mercury in a biopic on Queen!
Written by Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything), the film will focus on the band and its iconic lead singer. Bohemian Rhapsody has been in production at 20th Century Fox and New Regency for eight years, and is now set to be directed by Brian Singer (X-Men: Apocalypse) with remaining Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor on board as music producers.
Singer confirmed the news on Instagram, posting an image of Queen and writing, “Looking forward to Rami Malek playing Freddie.”
In 2013, disagreements about the direction of the film led Sacha Baron Cohen – who was originally cast as Mercury – to walk away from the project. Bohemian Rhapsody is scheduled to begin shooting in early 2017.
