Spooky teasers for Longlegs have been circling since the beginning of the year, leaving us both terrified and curious. The teasers, which showed cryptic messages for us to decode, created a collective sense of excitement over the movie's release. Giving away little information and barely revealing Nicolas Cage's face, the long-awaited trailer was the perfect combination of exciting and mysterious.
Here's why you have to watch it!
The Storyline
The plot follows clairvoyant FBI agent Lee Harker, who is assigned a serial killer case by Agent Carter because of Harker's special abilities at deciphering a crime scene. Later, Harker deduces a connection between her, the serial killer, and the case.
Nicolas Cage's Performance
Following Cage's unsuccessful screen presence in the 2006 horror movie The Wicker Man, he struggled to retrieve his status in the genre for over a decade. It wasn't until 2017, after his role in Mom and Dad, followed by his roles in Mandy, Color Out of Space, and Arcadian, that the actor's exceptional horror screen presence was redeemed.
Longlegs, however, is practically a game-changer for Nicolas Cage that completely erases any of his previous mishaps in the horror genre. His disturbing and ominous portrayal of Longlegs character is frightening to watch. You wouldn't even recognise Cage, with the dusty-looking make-up and hair, pale face, swollen lips, and overall unsettling appearance, which makes it all the more immersive and scary.
Other Notable Performances
Maika Monroe plays the role of agent Lee Harker, an awkward and introverted woman with a special talent for solving crimes. Her portrayal of the anti-social character proved successful, evoking some second-hand awkwardness in certain scenes, like when a child attempts to bond with her or when she rigidly sits at a bar with a work colleague.
The movie also stars Blair Underwood as agent Carter (who handed the case over to Harker). His appearance as a slightly positive figure balanced out the darkness and satanic ambience in the movie. Longlegs is the actor's first horror presence, but since he said he enjoyed filming it so much, we expect it to be the first of many.
Our Thoughts
While Longlegs isn't as exceptionally disturbing as it claims to be, it still is a spooky and scary ride. The storyline, plot twists, and Nicolas Cage's character all make it an incredibly worthwhile watch!
