There has been a trend on the rise of what we now call a “spinoff”, which is when a show comes out to continue the sub-plotlines of secondary characters of an already successful TV series. While some spinoffs are the producers’ way of generating more profit from a smash hit, others are true masterpieces that dig deep into interesting characters from the original work and introduce us to new ones.
So, let’s rank these spinoffs from best to worst, counting those we are grateful for being made, and those that never should have been even thought of!
1- Better Call Saul
This award-winning dramatic piece of art is nothing short of brilliant. We all loved Saul Goodman in the modern classic Breaking Bad, and rightfully so. We just couldn’t get enough of his sassy one-liners and questionable morality. Sadly, this beautifully-made spinoff comes to an end this year with its fifth and final season. So long, our favourite criminal lawyer!

2- The Originals
The smash-hit of popular vampire teen drama, The Vampire Diaries, introduced us to a world of gorgeous-looking young adults going through love struggles, moral disputes, and lots of blood-sucking! Surprisingly, its spinoff is as outstanding as the original series was.
The secret to its success was maintaining the core personalities of the four vampires, known as The Originals, while introducing us to new characters that are just as attractive and interesting, with a few plot twists scattered here and there. The studio has also produced a spinoff of this spinoff, Legacies, which went into a more fun direction than its predecessors, though it sadly didn’t catch on!

3- The Flash
CW’s smash hit superhero extraordinaire “Arrow” introduced us to our favourite fastest man alive, Barry Alan, AKA The Flash. This spinoff is a beautifully-made tribute for all fans of The Flash and other superheroes (the ones from DC, more so than from Marvel).
It also features several witty sidekicks and a most indulging love-hate relationship with the show’s villains. It also features some awesome crossover episodes with other DC television superheroes. Make sure to catch all seasons of the hit show, and you will not regret it!

4- Fear The Walking Dead
The post-apocalyptic modern classic hit The Walking Dead has been a rollercoaster of emotions, gruesome deaths, and tons of zombies. This captivating show has now produced some not-so-necessary offspring, with plans from the studio to make three more spinoffs that explore some of its iconic side characters.
Fear The Walking Dead, however, is an ongoing exploration of the origin of the undead plague that infected the country while Rick, our beloved leading man, was in a coma. The show has mixed reviews, to say the least, but we feel it would have been better if this one bites the dust (pun intended).

5- Joey
Who hasn’t watched Friends time after time until they memorised most jokes and comic situations, and fell in love with all six of those wonderful people all over again? The ’90s classic lasted a decade ended so beautifully in the early 2000s with ideal send-offs to all its leads.
As much as we’ll always love our hilarious, goofy, handsome, and very Italian Joey Tribbiani, his spinoff was a real bummer to everyone who watched it. It was not even funny or relatable and just didn’t feel right. But at least we have HBO’s special Friends reunion for solace!

Honourable mention: “How I Met Your Father” is a new spinoff of the modern sitcom classic of another iconic group of friends that we all know and love, How I Met Your Mother. They even brought back some of the original cast, possibly for more views from the fandom. However, this one, just like Friends, really didn’t need any follow-up. We think that some things are better left how they ended. Yes, Hollywood, we are talking to you!
