Over the past couple of years, we’ve all heard many breakups stories from people all around us, and, oddly enough, most of them have lines that are so cliché, it’s impossible to listen to them without cringing!
Sometimes, it feels like the people who use these lines actually go on a website to choose their speeches from the same set of words, completely disregarding how they mostly make no sense at all. And yet, they don’t seem to be going away any time soon!
What’s the story behind this infamous pattern?
It’s a fact that most of these lines have been said, word for word, in many Egyptian movies and series. What we don’t know, however, is if they were originally quoted from films or if they were actually said by someone in real life and inspired some writer, who made sure they kept getting told and retold ‘til they made it into the showbusiness.

1- “You deserve someone better than me”
So, this one’s a classic breakup line that is largely said by men. Even if we get the full story, we still don’t understand the point because this excuse gets one of two reactions: relief for the dumpee because they definitely do deserve better, or confusion because we got lost in the details and have no idea why the person said that.
2- “I will wait for you”
Can you imagine that this can be a breakup line? This sneaky line is mainly preferred by ladies, who unfortunately made it a national code that basically says, “nope, I’m not going to wait for you”. Egyptian guys who travel for years or serve time in the military are the main victims of this harsh unofficial breakup line.

3- “It’s not you; it’s me”
Another generic yet surprisingly international breakup line that’s so sneaky, it disguises the many issues lined up in the speaker’s mind before they say it out loud. For instance, it could mean “I’m sorry, I have commitment issues, and I can’t dive into something serious right now” or “I just don’t like you anymore, but I won’t say that”. So yes, it’s frequently used as an escape plan!

4- “I think we’re better as friends”
After a breakup, many people, mainly girls, like sending their exes to the “friendzone” through this infamous line. Recently, many guys have adopted it too. This vicious cycle from friends to lovers to strangers is just BRUTAL, we know! Some people even kick it up a notch with the cruel “we’re more like siblings” upgrade to this old classic. This update, we think, is just pure agony-inducing.

5- “My career is just super important to me right now”
This one is sort of new to the breakup game, but it’s already spreading everywhere! Our statistics—based on the stories we hear—point out that women use it more than men. We won’t judge harshly over this line since it IS hard to juggle your career and your love life—that kind of multitasking requires a lot of time to balance!
