The 12th of April marks the International Day for Street Children, aiming to spread awareness and provide opportunities for street children worldwide. Unfortunately, there is an overabundance of kids with no family ties who are living on the streets, hiding in unknown buildings, and being used to beg for money. Since this noble occasion falls in Ramadan this year, here are some ideas to contribute to saving the homeless children of Egypt.
1- Call the Hotline Provided by the Government for Professional Help
via El Ommal
UNICEF partners with the Ministry of Health and Population, the National Population Council, the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, and the Ministry of Social Solidarity to make the world a better place for kids.
The primary way to protect children’s rights under the law is to call the hotline 16000, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, if you encounter a child who is homeless.
2- Use the “Nabtet Misr” App to Report Cases of Children Being Exposed to Danger
via Google Play
The National Council for Childhood and Motherhood announced a few years ago the release of the app “Nabtet Misr”, which provides several services to its users dedicated to improving their ability to communicate with and report crimes to the government.
Services include reporting cases of children at risk, missing children, and children found, as well as family support and counselling for mother and child, with a focus on maintaining the privacy of all callers and informants. Other services include providing “health, psychological, and legal information, and instructions on positive parenting methods” that may be useful to Egyptian parents.
The app is only available for Android users.
3- Donate to Resala’s “Atfal Ad El Hayah” Rehabilitation Movement
via Facebook
The Resala organisation includes numerous donation opportunities for people in need. And it also dedicates an activity called “Atfal Ad El Hayah” for street children in Egypt.
This service is a way to help kids who have grown up on the streets and been exposed to danger by providing them with the care and rehabilitation they need to find a new, stable life where they can finally start fresh. Check this link for donations or volunteering.
4- If You Are Providing Aid Yourself, Make Sure It Is the Most Suitable for Their Needs
via Dostor
Children living on the streets in Egypt may benefit less from monetary aid since they often cannot put the money to good use or are forced to hand over their meagre earnings to their adult caretakers.
Give them small meals, old blankets, or used clothing they can’t resell on the black market. If you want to make a difference in their lives, you can also take them to a charitable charity serving homeless kids.
