Birthdays are joyous occasions that are celebrated differently around the world. Of course, in our eyes, the cheerful song and the cake with its candles are most certainly a must, but apparently, some countries do things a little differently. So, without further ado, how about we introduce you to some of these unique cultural celebrations for one’s birthday?

The Mexican Birthday Piñata

As we all know, Mexicans have a certain talent for having a good time. They wouldn’t settle for a usual celebration without taking it to the next level, would they? Therefore, birthday parties usually have a piñata full of candy, which the blindfolded birthday person smashes with a broomstick. How fun is that!

The Jamaican Antiquing Day with Flour

In Jamaica, birthday celebrations are taken to a whole new level using flour and water. Firstly, the “well-wishers” throw water on the special one’s face (to make sure the flour sticks). Then, they coat their face with flour! Doesn’t it sound like someone will have to have an intense shower to get that mixture off? Sure, but it’s fun and rather interactive!

The Korean Seaweed Soup

Along with the usual celebration, Koreans added a cultural tradition that is meaningful to their history. The person has to eat seaweed soup on their birthday as Korean mothers tend to eat it a lot when they are pregnant. Therefore, the soup represents the mother’s love, and we think it’s an incredibly sweet thing to do on such a special day!

The Canadian Nose Grease

Canadians have this strange tradition to protect someone from bad luck. On their birthday, the person’s nose has to be greased with butter! Supposedly, by doing this, the greased nose will be too slippery for bad luck to reach this person. Can you imagine smelling like butter every year on your birthday? Honestly, we don’t know how to feel about this one, but we’d like to imagine it’s worth it.

The German Sweeping Day

Although this tradition is a bit outdated, it’s still very much a classic. When it’s the 30th birthday of a single German man, he has to sweep the steps of the city hall in his city! Isn’t that such an odd thing to do for celebration? But then, we all know how serious the German can be, right?

Also, the birthday person has to get drinks for their friends, not the other way around. So, now we know that the poor birthday boy is not only cleaning but also buying drinks instead of singing and taking gifts! Thank you, Egypt, for keeping it all simple and effortless!
