When it comes to the dating scene, people in Egypt are so cavalier with the phrase “I love you”. You see a girl going on one date with a guy before telling her friends that she thinks she’s falling for him! How is that even possible? Was that date five months long?
On the other hand, men go through the same thing differently. After one date, they already feel committed to the relationship with texts like “Rawahty?” and “Matelbeseesh da tany”. Some other men even go to the “I love you” phase after one conversation with a girl! Does it occur to you that maybe you just like the person? Let us tell you more about the skipped steps in Egyptian relationships.
The Egyptian problem with “liking VS loving someone”
There is a dating issue worldwide in which people struggle to know if they are actually in love with someone or if they just like or are attracted to them. It is always difficult for a couple that has been dating for some time to confess their love for each other. And when they do proclaim it, it’s always a profound moment that is remembered for years!
However, Egyptians have skipped the transition from ‘liking’ to ‘loving’, as the relationship spectrum in Egypt goes from “stranger” to “love of my life” in a span of a few hours! How is it healthy to skip these many steps in a relationship? We honestly feel that telling someone you love them instead of saying that you like them cheapens the meaning of those three words.

What are the healthy steps in a relationship?
In a normal, healthy relationship, you start liking the person. Basically, you feel happy and enjoy your time with your significant other, and, trust us, these feelings stick around for a long time before they eventually turn into the feeling of wanting to spend the rest of your life with that person. The latter is, of course, love, and it’s never really felt at the beginning of a relationship. So yes, the one you are dating now may be the one, but you need time to reach that phase. So take it slow, people!

Egyptians and crushes
Aside from celebrity crushes, liking or being attracted to a person within your circle is different. A crush can turn into a partner one day if the odds are in someone’s favour. With that being the case, how come Egyptians have so many crushes?! People don’t develop romantic feelings this easily. That is why we think people are too casual with the word “crush” as well. Maybe you just like the person as a friend, or think this person is cool and you would like to befriend them one day. Remember that not all feelings are romantic!
