According to the World Health Organisation, breast cancer is currently one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide. That is why we would like to remind you that periodical checkups are vital in helping to detect and fight off the disease in its early stages. Egypt’s Baheya campaigns and events have contributed to raising awareness of the importance of early detection and treatment of breast cancer. With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, we thought we would give a shout-out to influential ladies who were able to win their battles against breast cancer and inspire us all! So, allow us to honour these incredible breast cancer survivors!
1- Basma Wahba
At the age of 39, while on a business trip in Dubai, Basma Wahba randomly found out that she had a problem when she was praying and felt a weird lump on her chest. A mammogram soon after revealed that she had breast cancer, and she went on to receive a year of treatment, including removing one of her breasts. In her interviews, Basma always encourages women to stay joyful and positive and have periodical checks for breast cancer.

2- Yasmine Geith
The young Egyptian actor Yasmine Geith, who starred in the famous 2017 Ramadan series Halawat Al Donia, has always been praised for her role in raising awareness of breast cancer and tackling the social stigma that ‘cancer equals death’. In one of her speeches, Yasmine tearfully expressed how she initially thought she had only a few remaining days to live following her diagnosis with the disease. However, later, once she heard positive stories of breast cancer survivors still living long lives, the starlet decided to take on the mission to spread that same message to other women. How inspiring is that?

3- Sherine Akmal
Sherine Akmal is the talented owner of a media production house and the proud mother of two daughters. She fought her battle against breast cancer with great faith, which helped her tremendously in getting through her treatment smoothly. After successfully finishing her treatment, Sherine advises women fighting the battle against breast cancer to keep their faith, as that is the most important thing in helping them stay strong. She also says to take advice regarding the disease solely from your treating doctor, as the internet can be very misleading.

4- Betty Mehana
Betty Mehana never suspected cancer until she noticed some irregularities in her breast. Her doctors suspected the lumps were breast cancer, and tests proved their diagnosis right. Betty received her treatment at Cairo Cure private oncology facility in Cairo, despite having a French passport and, therefore, the ability to receive her treatment abroad. After completing chemical and radiation therapies and undergoing surgery, Betty’s final message is that Egypt has skilful doctors, equivalent to those abroad, that are more than capable of beating the disease.
