Celebrating Christmas differs from one country to another, however, there are certain traditions that are the same all over the world. Of course, each tradition has a story, a secret, or history behind it. That's why we started digging into it to let you know how these traditions first originated.

Here are the most common Christmas traditions and the interesting stories behind them.

#1 The Christmas Tree

The Christmas tree is an evergreen tree that is associated with Christ's birth because it gives us everlasting hope in the future. It's a symbol that's meant to spread joy among everyone, as well as the certainty that we'll spend eternity in heaven.

#2 Santa Claus

Santa Claus is originally the name of Saint Nicholas, a well-known saint born to a rich family and has always been helpful to others, especially poor families. He used to go down chimneys or sneak into homes from open windows and leave gifts under the Christmas tree for little kids.

#3 Stockings

One of the recognisable Christmas decorations is the stockings. The story behind those cute red socks dates to a long time ago when a poor man grieved the loss of his wife and wasn't able to provide for his 3 daughters' marriages. When Saint Nicholas heard the news, he climbed down the family's chimney and left gold coins in the girls’ socks that were hanged by the fireplace to dry.

#4 Red and Green

If two colours are to be associated with Christmas, then these are definitely red and green. The colour red holds several meanings such as Adam's apple, or according to Christian beliefs, it sometimes refers to the blood of Jesus Christ. The colour green, on the other hand, often refers to youth and hope.

#5 Bells

The sound of the bells brings feelings of nostalgia and joy, bringing comfort to souls and relief to hearts. Also in Christianity, it carries the good news of Jesus’s birth.
