The dilemma of fitting in society has always been one of the hardest obstacles to achieve for individuals with special needs. Feeling like you don’t fit in or that you’re not like others is quite depressing. This is why when we heard of Do Art Lounge Cafe we felt that there’s still good in this world.

Do Art recently opened its doors in Alexandria to be the first café for individuals with down syndrome. The café/restaurant is packed with games and TV for everyone to enjoy. Lots of activities are made available too such as drawing. The place will also be hosting workshops and seminars of inspiring examples who are very successful and managed to achieve great things in many fields.

Founders Omnia Iman El Bahr and Dalia Abdallah came together and turned this idea into reality. “I came up with the idea because I wanted those with down syndrome to feel welcomed and that they have a place in our community; they’re not outsiders,” Omnia told El Youm7.

Omnia also added that the staff is well trained for the job; the training period lasted for a month and a half. It’s worth mentioning that one of the staff members is graduated from the Faculty of Arts, Psychology department. He’s certified in psychology of individuals with down syndrome.

Another great thing about this place is having Kareem there, a waiter rocking that extra chromosome! Omnia talked about how much he loves working there and sometimes even insists on working overtime after his working hours just because he enjoys his job. Kareem, who’s also a winner of the Swimming Championship of the Republic, got his training just like the rest of the staff. They made sure that he can handle working prior to hiring him in order not to overwhelm him with tasks.
