Thirty one days. There are thirty one days in March, which means thirty one nights of music at Cairo Jazz Club await the city’s music marks and nightlife nuts, with our friends at ‘The Jazz’ have promised a touch of the alternative on Thursdays, while also shipping in some tasty foreign imports. But enough the talk, because one of the month’s highlights is pretty early on…

RADIO ACID, TELEPOETIC & MARC WAHBA (Thursday 2nd)

While Tuesday nights have been reserved for the alternative side of Cairo’s music scene, Cairo Jazz Club is kicking off the first weekend of the month with two of the most unique bands in the country. First up, the analog and the digital come together with electronic fusion band, Radio Acid, before one of Alexandria’s finest musical exports, Telepoetic, take to the stage. Rounding the night off is DJ and general man-about-town, Marc Wahba, who ends proceedings on a distinctly funky note.

SADA THAT & MINUS T (Thursday 9th)

Speaking of making an impression, last month saw Sada That announce their arrival with a single and video that had the Egyptian interwebs buzzing. The new Hany Mustafa-fronted rock band are set to have a busy month with their first string of gigs and a debut EP. First up, though, is the band’s debut on Thursday 9th, when CJC also welcomes one of the most underappreciated and versatile DJs in all the land, Minus T, for a rare public appearance.

AQSA ALWASAT & FINROD (Tuesday 14th)

It’s been a longtime since keyboardist and producer, Amr Ezz, and singer-songwriter, Tuqa McAwi, aka Aqsa Alwasat, have taken centrestage at Cairo Jazz Club, but the experimental duo are set to return with their musical fusion antics in tow. They’ll be in good company on the night, too, with more of Alexandria’s finest, ambient experimentalists, Finrod, set to return to CJC by popular demand. Need more encouragement? Read our recent interview with Belal Mohamed of Finrod about a pink, zebra-shaped spaceship.

FUNK OFF & SPECIAL GUESTS (Thursday 16th)

When CJC celebrates a birthday, they really go all out. This time, it’s the turn of Funk OFF’s Farra, who celebrates on what is shaping up to be a huge night. We already know that Funk OFF can, in no uncertain terms, bring it on any given night, but this particular special evening will feature the likes of rockabilly band, The Cadillacs, dynamic duo, Disco Misr, and – well, we’ve promised the guys at CJC that we’d keep it a secret…

MOHASSEB'S FIFTH ANNIVERSARY (Friday 17th)

things-mohasseb

Here's the best piece of life advice we could ever give you - find someone who loves you like Cairo Jazz Club loves Mohasseb. Few DJs in Cairo get people moving like the progressive house DJ does and he's been doing exactly that for five fantastic years at The Jazz - something worth celebrating, don't you think?

EGYPTIAN PROJECT (Tuesday 21st)

Music, of course, knows no bounds – but in Egyptian Project, you have one of the most unlikely groups you’re ever likely to see. Made up of galabeya-donning Egyptian and flat-cap wearing French musicians, the group has made quite the impression with their rare gigs in Egypt over the last few years, but return this month for one of the most unique nights of music at CJC this month.

CAIRO BIG BAND SOCIETY (Thursday 23rd)

Cairo Big Band Society are no strangers to CJC regulars. Bringing together some of the most talented - and occasionally eccentric - jazz musicians in the country, this month's gig for CBBS (a cool new acronym we just came up with) is a bit of a special one for the group. While they have usually taken the Sunday spot, things will be turned up a notch as part of the newly-branded Thursday line-ups.

THE SWISS CONNECTION FT. FREYA/JACK & JUUS/MUCHO STYLEZ/SEBZZ (Friday 24th)

Fridays are, of course, feverish over at The Jazz, but on the 24th we’re getting a taste of the continental with The Swiss Connection – a night that will welcome, not one, not even two, but three Swiss imports in the form of Freya, the duo, Jack & Juus, and the wonderfully named Mucho Stylez, with one of Cairo’s best, Sebzz, also strutting his considerable stuff.

CAIRO 360’S 7TH ANNIVERSARY FT. RAMY DJUNKIE & AK (Wednesday 29th)

360-7-anni

Hurrah! Our sister site, the site that laid the foundation for the flood of English-language online lifestyle magazines, Cairo 360, is marking its triumphant seventh anniversary. We know the Cairo 360 folk all too well, and while they seem like of level-headed bunch, when you get them all together at Cairo Jazz Club and sprinkle a little bit of hip-hop into the air, things get weird.

THE LAST SUPPER & SAFI (Thursday 30th)

Helping wind down a busy March on the last weekend of the month, Canadian rockers, The Last Supper, are set to take to the stage some years after playing dates in Cairo and Sharm El Sheikh. Having formed way back when in 1996, the band’s seeming fondness affair with Om El Donia is owed to one of the members being Egyptian – TWIST! Yes, percussionist Diaa Tass has been adding a distinct Egyptian flavor to The Last Supper’s music and music fans will recognize Tass as an former/occasional member of Yehya Khalil’s band and as one half of sibling duo, the Tass Brothers, with bassist bro, Ehab. This is one for pure music lovers.

These are, of course, just a fraction of the events taking place at Cairo Jazz Club this month – stay tuned to Cairo Jazz Club on Facebook page and the Cairo Gossip events calendar for more.
