Egypt’s Ministry of Culture has hosted the annual Cairo International Festival for Experimental Theatre since its formation in 1988. CIFET presents innovative international theatre to Egyptian and Arab spectators while showcasing regional and local plays to international theatre experts and festivals.

The festival also seeks to foster a climate of open discussion and cooperation among the region’s many theatre-related communities and organisations.

The CIFET opening ceremony took place in the Cairo Opera House, which welcomed many renowned guests. It was a star-studded spectacle on the red carpet, with celebrities such as Liqaa Swidan, Samiha Ayub, Samih El Surati, and many more famous faces from Egypt and the Arab world.

Nineteen plays, both Egyptian and international, will be presented during this year’s annual festival. Charlie, a musical, was performed as part of the opening ceremony, telling the story of Charlie Chaplin’s life, with the help of Ahmed El-Bohey at the helm and the talents of Mohamed Fahim, Nour Qadri, Ayman El-Shewy, Emad Ismail, and Dalia El-Gendy in the leading roles.

There will be two Egyptian productions in the festival’s main competition. The first Egyptian play to participate in the festival is a version of William Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice” called “The Man Who Has Eaten Paper”. Director Ahmed Ezzat El-Alfi will also compete with his play “Icarus”.
