For all comic book geeks and enthusiasts, brace yourself this weekend for the 9th edition of the CairoComix Festival, held at Mahmoud Mukhtar Cultural Center from the 1st to the 3rd of November. Get ready to meet your favourite artists, get their signatures, explore and buy new comics, and learn tips and tricks from industry masters.

For the ninth year, CairoComix highlights its understanding of new artists' challenges and frustrations while trying to get into the industry. It invites artists to work together to create a unique scene while challenging the surrounding obstacles.

CairoComix presents exhibitions, workshops, and artist meetings for the year 2024. Here are some brief insights into what they are:

Kaslan Gedan by Ahmed Omar & Mostafa Rahma

Get to know the artists and creators behind our beloved 80s & 90s childhood character, Kaslan Gedan of Majid Magazine, and the story of how they designed, formed, and created his character and narrative.

 

Akh Ya Dahry by Khalid Nahar

Khaled Nahar, illustrator and comic book writer, recounts his journey with chemotherapy, a mastectomy, and his recovery. He sketched how it all started from severe back pain and so much more.

 

Qui a tué Asmahan By Laure Ibrahim & Nadia Safsaf

Based on the true story of the legendary Arabic singer, Laure and Nadia attempt to investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding Asmahan's accident and address the speculations that surfaced after her death.

 

Portfolio Masterclass

In this year's masterclass, you'll watch Khalid Nahar, Simona Gabrieli, and Pilar Emitxin work on their art projects from scratch to execution, traditionally by pens and inks or by drawing programs and tablets.

 

Meet The Artists:

Mostafa Rahma

Born in Mansour in 1952, Mostafa Rahma worked in his city for several years before travelling to Dubai. He joined Aletihad newspaper, where the organisation decided to create Majid magazine after two years. He & Ahmed Omar were part of a 12-person team where they first came up with Kaslan's character.

 

Khalid Nahar

Illustrator and comic book writer based in Amman, Jordan. He publishes his comic books in Fanzine and is known for his funny reels on his Instagram account. Akh Ya Dahry is his first published and printed graphic novel.

 

Rania Hussein Amin

An Egyptian writer and illustrator of children's stories and comics. She's famous for her Farhana children's book series. She studied psychology at the American University and has written several books about parental practices that should be followed when raising children.

 

Simona Gabrieli

Founder of Alifbata Editions since 2015, she's based in Marseille, and specialises in publishing and translating Arabic comics. She published her first translated graphic novel, Marab wa Laban by Lina Merhaj, in 2018. She's also the publisher of  Qui a tué Asmahan By Laure Ibrahim & Nadia Safsaf, 2024 edition.
