By the efforts of Medrar for Contemporary Art, the 11th edition of the Cairo Video Festival (CVF) is scheduled to return this year from the 1st to the 17th of December. Cairo Video Festival always aims to showcase great selections of video art and experimental films from video artists from all over the world. The festival will be held with the support of the European Union in collaboration with EUNIC Egypt, Pro Helvetia Cairo - Swiss Arts Council, The French Embassy and The French Institute in Egypt, the Italian Cultural Institute, and the Canada Council for the Arts.
What to Expect at the 11th Edition
This edition is dedicated to the people of Gaza, as Medrar stands in complete solidarity with Palestine. The 11th edition mainly features five programmes: Blind Spot, Dissect, Speculative Meditations, Resilience, and The Sphinx Inside You. The five programmes include cinema screenings, exhibitions, installations, and VR films. They delve into various themes of origins, land, massive transformations, technology, resilience in the face of adversity, and the core within each of these. The programmes complement the festival theme, Freak of Screen.
Cairo Video Festival 11th Edition Theme: Freak of Screen
At the crossroads of portraying reality and imagination, a heavily artificial version of a locust swarm appears. The swarm chaotically tries to find their way through, yet they still have the same patterns of wreaking uncontrollable havoc as real locusts. They ultimately destroy nature and stability everywhere they pass. Through this theme, the 11th edition portrays the radical transformations within the art industry caused by technological progress and digital transformations.
The CVF 11th edition will screen over 40 video art productions carefully selected from around 800 submissions, besides multiple workshops and talks. The festival takes place at the Italian Cultural Institute, French Institute, Zawya Cinema, and Cairo Jazz Club.
