When it comes to literature, many writers have produced novels that we just can’t get over to this very day. They may not be too old, as some of them are pretty recent, but we still consider these books classics in the world of Egyptian literature. So let us honour these well-written works together because we honestly think you should consider reading, or maybe re-reading, them to get a thrill out of their narratives.
Utopia
via Medio Oriente e Dintorni
In the year 2023, Ahmed Khaled Tawfik’s Utopia takes us on a dystopian journey in an Egyptian society which showcases his view on classism in the most elaborate way. The idea of Utopia is probably taken from Plato’s Republic, but this version is still astonishing!
Torab El-Mas

We know the movie was exceptional, but the novel is even better! The level of meticulousness in Torab El-Mas’s details is smoothly laid out in this narrative, making us believe that it’s simply out of this world! If you didn’t get the chance to read Ahmed Mourad’s masterpiece, you should definitely give it a shot.
El-Gazzar
via Storytel
Horror fiction is one of the most gripping genres in Egypt, and Hassan El-Gendy is definitely a reputable writer in the field. The story of El-Gazzar revolves around an act of revenge that ends in a very gruesome way. If we can give you any hint about the type of horror it presents, all we can say is it’s very Hannibal-like with a twist.
The Granada Trilogy
via Amina's Bookshelf
Radwa Ashour is the only one who can craft a dramatic story that will take you to the gates of Granada, introducing you to its people and history, using only her words. The novel consists of three different segments that are each fundamentally different. In case you are lost on what we mean, you’ll have to read it to get the full picture!
Honourable mention: Scheherazade on Fire

This is not really a novel, but it’s still quite the masterful piece! Life coaching was taken to a whole new level by Heba El-Sawah. In this book, Scheherazade is a modern girl who travels back in time to tell tales to Shahrayer, who is a pretty arrogant man. She teaches him and us a lot about life through her stories. There are also sections in the book that asks questions to you, the reader, to help you better understand your “true self”.
