One of Cairo’s landmark bars and music venues is shutting down: After Eight Cairo announced yesterday on Facebook that they will be closing their doors this December after more than fifty years.

Opened in 1962 and located in a small alleyway just off Kasr El Nil Street in Downtown Cairo, After Eight became a seminal hangout spot for many – it was also the launching pad for a lot of important Egyptian musicians and bands. Before they hit the big time and signed record deals, Wust El Balad was a regular Monday night act at the smoky, dimly-lit bar; as were pretty much everyone in the underground rock music scene. DJ nights were also packed courtesy of the rather eccentric DJ Dina, who could whip the crowd into frenzy with her Arabic pop playlist.

Yes, the place was often unbearable for its poor ventilation, and yes, we’ve occasionally complained about their alcohol prices, but it’s one thing to grumble and another thing to have the whole venue shut down. Say what you want about After Eight, but if you were a regular in the 2000s, you’ll have fond memories of the great nights spent on their dancefloor or listening to some quality live music.

While there’s no word yet on why they’ve decided to shut down, we can only guess that it’s a sign of the hard times we’re living in these days, which makes us wonder: who’s next?

We’re looking forward to their Closing Night Party on December 16th, but we’ll be heading there with heavy hearts to say goodbye to one of the most enduring venues of its kind.
