Cairo is stepping into the global spotlight this season as the long-awaited Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) finally opens its doors beside the Giza Pyramids, and the entire city is buzzing with anticipation. Years in the making, this extraordinary landmark isn’t just another museum; it’s a modern masterpiece celebrating one of the world’s oldest civilisations in a breathtaking new light.

A New Chapter for Egypt’s History

Standing proudly on the Giza Plateau, just minutes from the Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum is officially the largest archaeological museum in the world, designed to house over 100,000 artefacts spanning more than 5,000 years of history.

At the heart of it all lies Tutankhamun’s complete treasure collection, displayed together for the first time since its discovery in 1922. Visitors will be able to wander through halls filled with golden relics, colossal statues, and intricate carvings, each piece telling the timeless story of Egypt’s glory. The museum also includes cutting-edge conservation labs, immersive galleries, a children’s museum, and spaces for cultural events, making it more than just a historical showcase; it’s an evolving cultural experience.

The Long-Awaited Opening

After decades of delays, the Grand Egyptian Museum will officially open on 1 November 2025, with public access beginning on 4 November. For Egypt, this moment is historic, a national celebration symbolising progress, pride, and the fusion of ancient heritage with contemporary innovation.

Ticket prices have been confirmed, with entry set at EGP 200 for Egyptians and around USD 25 for foreign visitors. Students, seniors, and specific categories will enjoy discounted or free admission, encouraging everyone to take part in this monumental occasion.

How Cairo is Preparing

As the countdown begins, Cairo is transforming. Roads in Giza are being upgraded, new transport routes are being refined, and hotels and restaurants are gearing up for an influx of local and international guests. Entire neighbourhoods near the museum are receiving facelifts, a sign that the city is truly preparing to welcome the world.

Preparations And Celebrations

Tour companies have already crafted GEM-themed experiences, combining visits to the museum with sunset views of the Pyramids, dining experiences, and even private evening tours. Across the capital, expect cultural events, pop-up exhibitions, and celebrations honouring Egypt’s creative spirit.

To mark the opening, the government has even declared November 1st a national holiday, allowing everyone to witness and celebrate this defining moment in modern Egyptian history.

What Awaits Inside

Step through GEM’s enormous glass façade and you’re immediately greeted by a breathtaking sight: the towering statue of Ramses II, illuminated by natural light pouring in from the pyramid-lined horizon. The museum’s design blends minimalism with monumentality, a perfect reflection of Egypt’s balance between ancient power and modern artistry.

An Interactive Journey

The galleries are designed to lead you on a chronological journey through Egypt’s civilisation from prehistoric artefacts to the age of pharaohs and beyond. Interactive displays, digital storytelling, and immersive lighting create an atmosphere that feels alive, allowing visitors to connect emotionally with the past.

Behind the scenes, the museum also operates as a world-class conservation and research centre, where experts from across the globe work to preserve Egypt’s priceless heritage.

So, as the lights of Cairo reflect off GEM’s monumental façade, it’s clear that the city has just added a new jewel to its crown, one that promises to shine for generations to come.
