Ramadan iftar times are usually characterised by gatherings and sharing meals. As much fun as it might be to be invited to community get-togethers, it can be overwhelming if you are the one hosting an iftar at your home for the first time. With proper planning, it can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
1- Plan Your Guest List
Start by deciding how many people you can comfortably accommodate. Consider your space, seating, and table arrangements. If you are hosting a mixed group of fasting and non-fasting guests, be mindful of their needs as well.
2- Set a Budget
Iftar meals can range from simple to extravagant, but setting a budget helps you manage expenses. Consider food, drinks, decorations, and any additional items like disposable tableware if needed.
3- Create a Well-Balanced Menu
A traditional iftar usually begins with dates and water, followed by a mix of appetisers, main courses, and desserts. Keep in mind dietary restrictions and offer a variety of dishes. Starters may include dates, fresh juices, soup, and light salads. The main dishes could be a mix of protein, grains, and vegetables, such as grilled chicken, rice, and roasted veggies. For dessert, you could go for traditional sweets like qatayef, baklava, or fruit platters. As per the drinks, fresh juices, herbal teas, and plenty of water can keep everyone hydrated.
4- Prepare in Advance
Cooking everything on the same day can be stressful, so prepare as much as possible in advance. Chop vegetables, marinate proteins, and set the table early. Slow cookers and air fryers can also save time.

Iftar is at sunset, so timing is crucial. Plan to have everything ready at least 15 minutes before the Maghrib prayer. Use alarms to keep track of cooking times and allow buffer time for last-minute adjustments.
6- Create a Comfortable Ambiance
Decorate with simple touches like lanterns, fairy lights, or a themed table setting. Playing soft background music or Quranic verses can enhance the spiritual atmosphere.
7- Serving and Seating Arrangements
If you have a large number of guests, consider buffet-style serving to make it easier for everyone. Ensure comfortable seating with enough plates, utensils, and napkins.
8- Be Mindful of Prayer Time
Many guests will want to pray after breaking their fast. Set up a prayer space with prayer mats and ensure enough time before serving dessert.
