It’s not a stretch to say that television has always been a huge part of our lives. However, around the mid-to-late 2000s, it played an even more significant role because it introduced us to Turkish soap operas, which were mainly watched by many of our moms. That’s not to say that we, teenagers and children, weren’t just as enamoured with these soaps.

Since Turkish TV soaps have been a part of TV programming for a long while, how about we remind you of some of the more interesting ones? Read on to remind yourselves of five of the most interesting Turkish soap operas that Egyptians loved.

  • Fatma

First, we’d like to begin by asking our parents one question: Why? No, seriously, why would anyone think Fatma’s plot was something kids could follow? That aside, everyone in Egypt watched Fatma because, well, we all wanted to know what would happen and obsessed over Karim. However, it was very depressing.

  • El Eshq El Mamnou’

Drama, ‘spicy’ moments, and a very resentful and dysfunctional family—just how exciting could El Eshq El Mamnou’ get? This was the type of soap opera we couldn’t get enough episodes of! Everyone enjoyed this show because of the rollercoaster it took us on.

  • Nour

Dare we say cute but tragic? Because Nour is just that! Not only did this show give us the iconic story of Nour and Mohanad, but it also gave us a hopeful but eventually tragic love story between a poor girl and a rich guy. This show is worth a watch even now.

  • Nesa’ Ha’erat

Remember Desperate Housewives? Well, this was the Turkish version…with a twist! Naturally, we enjoyed every second of this soap opera because it gave us the story of women who lived for nothing but gossip and murder. What more could we ask for?

  • Hob Lel Egar

If you could rent someone to pretend to be your significant other and end up with an Omar or a Defne, wouldn’t you do it? This might be a rhetorical question because who would say no, but it’s also the plot of Hob Lel Egar. Cute and wholesome, this show gave us one of the cutest Turkish love stories we’ve ever seen. So if you want to give it a rewatch, go ahead as it’s one of the shows that has stood the test of time.
