Before the reign of MBC 3 and Nickelodeon, many of us grew up watching Spacetoon’s Arabic-dubbed anime shows. And we’re glad, because these shows have helped shape our personalities and left us with many happy memories for which we are forever grateful!

If you miss this simpler time before we collectively discovered the benefits of the internet and how we can use it to watch animes in their original Japanese, take a trip down memory lane with us right now!

1- Remi: The Homeless Girl

The tale of Remi, the cheerful and tender-hearted girl, had us all crying a river back then. In case you don’t remember it, allow us to remind you why it was an absolute tearjerker. In the anime, Remi was nobody’s girl, discovering that she was adopted after her biological parents abandoned her as a child.

One day, burdened by her finances, her adoptive father, Jerome, leaves to work in Paris and expects his wife to send Remi to the workhouse. He returns 10 years later to find that Remi is still there and goes ballistic! Things escalate when Remi is almost sold to a slave trader before she escapes!

Seriously, why did we tear our hearts apart for this show as kids? There was nothing kid-friendly about it!

2- Slam Dunk

Slam Dunk is about the story of Sakuragi Hanamichi (AKA Hasaan, as per the Arabic dub), a freshman in the Shohoku High School, who joins the basketball team to impress a girl he has a crush on. The youngster may not have won his crush’s heart, but he ended up being no ordinary player! He had near-inhuman physical capabilities and a killer sense of humour. Most importantly, Slam Dunk taught us from a very young age to establish strong bonds with each other and never give up.

3- Case Closed (AKA Detective Conan)

We may all remember Conan and his skills in solving crimes, though not everyone remembers how or why he was stuck in a 7-year-old’s body. Now, allow us to remind you! Shinichi Kudo, later known as Conan, is a great detective at only seventeen years old. One day, when Shinichi catches sight of two suspicious men, he decides to follow them and becomes a witness to a disturbing illegal activity.

When Shinichi is caught, the men dose him with an “experimental drug” and abandon him to die. However, the boy survives but soon wakes up in the body of a seven-year-old, perfectly preserving his original intelligence and memories. He hides his real identity from everyone, and eventually takes on the alias of Conan Edogawa.

4- Captain Tsubasa

Captain Tsubasa (AKA Captain Maged, as per the Arabic dub) is one of the best animes ever made about football! The anime is characterised by its dynamic and exciting football moves, which are often depicted stylishly. The plot also focuses on Tsubasa’s relationship with his teammates, rivalries with his opponents, training, competition, and the action and outcome of every football match.

Also, everyone who watched this anime knows the dubbed theme song by heart! Remember how we all sang it so passionately while watching?

5- Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball was about Son Gokû, a fighter with a monkey tail who goes on a quest with an assortment of really odd characters in search of the “Dragon Balls”. In case you don’t remember what “Dragon Balls” are, they are a set of crystals that can give their bearer anything they desire!

The characters go to extreme lengths to find these crystals. And the saga continues in the spinoff Dragon Ball Z, which was also a hit. In the sequel, Goku and his allies have to defend the planet from an onslaught of new extraterrestrial enemies, and it was a crazy journey for them and us!
