Ever since we, the ’90s and early 2000s babies, were little kids, our parents excelled in giving us similar experiences. And one of those experiences, of course, was listening to the same standard songs that all Egyptian kids apparently listened to. Because we recently revisited these nostalgic hits, we’ve decided to list them here for you! Even if you don’t think you know what we’re talking about, trust us—once you listen to these childhood hits, you’ll surely remember them!
1- Toot Toot - AbdelMoneim Madbouly and Hoda Sultan
From the Egyptian TV show “La Ya Ebnaty El Aziza”, Toot Toot was sung by the main characters to their on-screen daughters. With word sequences we’re sure you’ve never heard before (like ‘metshada be leban mamtoot’, which translates to ‘pulled by chewing gum’), it’s one of the catchiest kid songs in Egyptian history.
2- Yalla Bena - Afaf Rady
We’re sure you know this one! Your parents or grandparents may have sung Yalla Beena to you at some point in your childhood, especially if you’ve lost a tooth and they had to throw it into the ‘shamoosa’ (AKA the sun). Or, maybe you heard it when you woke up in the morning right after your “good morning’s”—makes it so heartwarming, doesn’t it?
3- Mama Zamanha Gaya - Mohamed Fawzy
For kids, Mama Zamanha Gaya is either very soothing or super creepy—there’s just no in-between. If you’re familiar with old movies, then you’ll remember first hearing this classic song in the film Safah El Nesa’, which may be where the slight creepiness comes in for some people. However, you just can’t deny this song’s status in Egyptian children’s music—it’s still used to soothe children crying for their mothers to this day!
4- Ya Ashaby W Sahbaty - Safaa Abou El-Souod
You probably remember hearing Ya Ashaby W Sahbaty in the 2010 comedy La Taragoa’ Wala Esteslam when the main character’s mother was singing it to him; however, we’ve all definitely heard it before. It was one of the songs parents overplayed for their children back in the day—just think of it as the ’90s version of Let It Go.
5- Abree’ El Shay - Sayed El Malah and Salah Jahren
One of the cutest songs ever, Abree’ El Shay easily has the sweetest lyrics we’ve heard in an Egyptian children’s song. Not only do the lyrics tell a very vivid story, but it also has a whole choreography, and the video shows it all, with the proper steps!
