Marvel’s newest TV series, Moon Knight, hit the internet last Wednesday, and fans couldn’t be happier with the latest content! Yet, as Egyptians, we have more reasons to be both joyous and proud of this exquisite new show. Why? Because not only is the show about our Ancient Egyptian roots but it is also produced and directed by our very own Mohamed Diab! His vision of this awesome anti-hero and his journey goes all the way back to the age of the Pharaohs in an extremely well-made and addictive manner. If you’ve been busy getting caught up on Egyptian Ramadan shows, here is what you missed in the show’s premiere.

1- Hesham Nazih’s masterful soundtrack and other Egyptian music

Featured along a thrilling sequence in the first episode and its end credits, the Egyptian musician Hesham Nazih gives everyone more than they asked for. His soundtrack captures the essence of the show’s Ancient Egyptian background, with a chilling operatic touch.

Abdelhalim Hafiz, Nagaat Al Sagheera, and DJ Kaboo are some of the artists whose musical work was featured in episode one of Moon Knight, giving every Egyptian who watched it an “I know this song!” moment. There’s even been talk of Wegz’s Dorak Gai being featured later! Critics and fans alike already praise the show’s music work so much that it makes us super proud of everyone who’s worked on it.

2- A love letter to Ancient Egypt

Since the show is about the disoriented Steven Grant, who works at the British Museum’s Ancient Egypt section’s gift shop, and how he gets cursed by the Egyptian god, Khonshu, we’re all guaranteed to see many things related to Ancient Egypt. And the show delivers, featuring beautiful visuals of some of our pharaoh gods and monuments in almost every scene.

This intricate work portrays our history excellently with the vision and persistence of Mohamed Diab for everything to be done exactly like the real monuments and statues, according to the producers’ statements. Even the antagonist’s wardrobe choices and sandals are a clear tribute to ancient Egypt’s fashion. The hours-long work and attention-to-details have definitely paid off in displaying the beauty of Ancient Egypt’s legacy. But this meticulousness is no surprise, considering that half the crew is Egyptian!

3- The Goddess Ammit takes centre-stage

The main plot of episode one (Spoiler Alert) is about the ancient goddess/demoness Ammit, whose judgment can tell you everything you did and will ever do. Hollywood icon Ethan Hawke plays Arthur Harrow, an eccentric yet charismatic cult leader who enforces Ammit's “mission” in modern-day Earth with his unique cane and moving scale tattoo, which can judge whether a person is good or bad.

This dramatic twist to Ammit's history is, of course, fictitious, yet the beautiful homage to our myths and culture behind Harrow’s villainous cult creates an extremely gripping narrative that has us, and the protagonist, in a twist. It almost doesn’t feel like an American-produced mega superhero show, but it so awesomely is!

4- Oscar Isaac looks a bit Egyptian

The lead actor, Oscar Isaac, who plays a British gift “shopist” (as he said it, nervously, in the series) in the Ancient Egypt section of the museum, looks a lot like us! We are not sure if this kind of casting was intentional, but it really helped the essence of the whole Egyptian-like spirit.

Oscar Isaac is a Guatemalan-American actor, but he nailed the British accent and the pronunciation of the Egyptology terms, which we know is difficult. We can’t wait for more Moon Knight to come, and we know you can’t either!
