If you know anything about Ahmed Dash, you know he’s one of the young stars who got to where he is now through pure talent and stellar acting skills. That said, we don’t know if we feel the same way about him as we used to before we watched Meen’ Al.

As one of the most anticipated Ramadan series this year, Meen’ Al has attracted a large following, and we have a couple of things about it that we’d like to address.

Before we begin, though, we’d like to address the show’s theme song by rapper Shahyn. Not only did this track have us extremely excited because this rapper is a genius, but we also had high hopes for a show overseen by Mariam Naoum and her writing workshop, Sard, which gave us several hits, including last Ramadan’s Khaly Balak Min Zizi.

Now, let’s dive in!

So, What’s The Show About?

Meen’ Al follows the story of Sherif (Dash), who is finally done with the Thanaweya Amma exams, a nightmare for all the students who go through them.

After that, he starts his first year in college, entering the major he didn’t want because his dad (like most Egyptian dads) pushed him to pick it. The main problem with his dad (Jamal Suleiman) is that he doesn’t understand why Sherif doesn’t want to be an engineer. And things go downhill even more once Sherif says he wants to get into business because he’ll excel at it.

Sherif takes the business thing seriously, and he thinks about creating a startup that creates ocordion paper chairs and starts lying to his family about attending college and paying its fees. All the while, his friends help him achieve his dreams.

Our Thoughts About The Show

Here’s the thing—we didn’t want to criticise the show too harshly, but it took too long to get into any hard subjects. And since the show was 15 episodes long, we definitely ran out of time that we could have used to tackle even harder topics or to get more in-depth into the topics the show already pitched.

Also, while we like that most of the actors involved are fresh faces, we think some of them needed more direction. One actor we think fits his role perfectly, though, is Youssef Gabriel as Akram. Despite his unfamiliarity with the camera, his polished acting skills shine through.

We think a lot of things in Meen’ Al could be altered. Sure, we know that it is about teenagers and their lives, but some aspects feel too forced. Especially when it comes to some of the acting and the direction. Still, we hope to see more scenes that will wow us because we expect a lot from Mariam Naoum.

Overall, the show is OK, but it isn’t quite what we expected, especially since some of its actors (like Jamal Suleiman and Ahmed Dash) are huge stars with several award-winning movies under their belts.
