Rami Malek just won an Oscar and made history. He is now officially the first actor of Egyptian roots to win, and we as Egyptians couldn’t be more proud.
He is famous for his role in Mr. Robot, but his performance as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) was remarkable. He was able to make us not only witness but also experience the hard life that Mercury had. At some point in the movie, we all believed that Mercury is Malek and Malek is Mercury. So let’s highlight that Rami Malek is “the man”, just as much as Mo Salah is fakhr el arab, Rami Malek “rafe3 ras el masryen.”
Let’s not forget that this is not Malek’s first award, as he has won The Golden Globe Award for his role as Mercury, as well as a SAG award and a BAFTA. Also, he previously won an Emmy for his outstanding performance in Mr. Robot.
Malek was born in LA but his family were immigrants from Cairo. “I am the son of immigrants from Egypt, I am a first-generation American”, Malek stated in his speech last night.
