Life gets strange when you get older, doesn’t it? You start enjoying Um Kulthum’s music, and you understand the importance of turtlenecks, but the most interesting change is (probably) how you now see old shows you used to love. Usually, what happens is you discover that these shows were, well, terrible, and that’s putting it lightly.

If you’re taking a minute trying to think of a show that fits the description of “was beloved by all and now everyone hates it because they have their critical googles on”, don’t bother. See, we sort of took a step ahead and thought of the perfect example—‘Aelat El-Hag Metwally, starring none other than the one and only Nour El-Sherif.

As we re-watched that show, we began to see A LOT of things we simply rolled with before as they really are. So, here are five things we can’t unsee now…and, after reading this, neither will you.

El-Hag Metwally Was A Grade-A Misogynist

via Al Ittihad

It doesn’t take a genius to figure this one out, but we can assure you that no one knew just how misogynistic this character was until now. Let’s just list a few things so you can get our point: Metwally started this series by literally harassing all his female clients, used his first wife’s money to expand her business and is somehow a “self-made man” and actually sees women as objects to be married for personal gain (remember when he married Madiha to get out of paying taxes? Yeah).

If that’s not enough, Metwally literally forbade his only biological daughter from learning how to drive. What kind of evil was that?!

Sa’eed Was Perfectly Within His Rights About Finishing College

As Metwally’s oldest son, Sa’eed was burdened with a lot of responsibilities and expectations from a young age. One of those was, of course, the expectation his dad had of him taking over the family business. The only problem is that Metwally didn’t want Sa’eed to go to college first, but it didn’t stop there.

At one point, Metwally actually forbade his son from being educated and put a lot of effort into stopping Sa’eed when he found out he’s been taking college classes.

Samira Was THE Only Person with Any Common Sense in the Whole Show

via Live News Web

It’s interesting how, out of all the female characters, Samira was the most hated within the show’s universe, and by interesting, we mean super predictable because, well, what else did any of us expect? She’s the only woman who refused to marry El-Hag Metwally, so she’s naturally supposed to be hated, and yet Samira was the only one with any functioning brain cells.

See, she didn’t just refuse to marry her boyfriend’s dad, who first met her as a child while he was trying to marry her own mother, but she also saw right through him and his need to control everyone around him. That’s a boss if we ever saw one!

El-Hag Metally Was A Horrible, Horrible Father

via Twitter

Yeah. No surprises there, we know, but it had to be said. He didn’t allow his sons to finish their education, he didn’t allow his daughter to learn how to drive and he actually tried to make a move on his son’s own girlfriend then refused to let him marry her. Father of the Year anyone?

Sa’eed and Fatima Got Married Despite Being Step-Siblings

via YouTube

Confusing? You don’t remember this happening? Okay, allow us to gently remind you. Remember how when Neamatallah married Metwally, she actually had two daughters that effectively became Sa’eed’s step-sisters?

Yeah, so for some reasons, both parents thought this was a good idea since it would all be in the family. Of course, as we realize this now, we can’t help but think of how disgusting it is to marry someone who was literally their sibling just years before.
