The word “legend” is an understatement when it comes to Sir Magdi Yacoub. Yacoub’s accomplishments are too numerous to mention, from saving countless lives to his charitable efforts, offering medical help to those who cannot afford the cost of the operation.

In light of the recent honouring of Sir Magdi’s humanitarian acts by the UAE’s Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashed Al Maktoum, here are five times the cardiothoracic surgeon made us incredibly proud:

#1 He was the first Egyptian to be awarded The UK Order of Merit by Queen Elizabeth II for his accomplishments in the fields of cardiothoracic surgery and transplants.

#2 Yacoub and his medical research team were able to make new heart parts from human cells.

#3 He established the Aswan Heart Center, which is built for the free treatment of children born with heart conditions.

#4 Sir Yacoub received the Lister Medal for his contribution to surgical science, and this prestigious award is a very distinguished one in the field of surgery.

#5 In appreciation for his endless efforts in serving poor people, the World Health Organization (WHO) awarded him for Humanitarian Services.
