Have you ever gone out with people whose personalities switch as soon as they have any chance to get attention? Well, that’s a ‘pick me girl’—sometimes ‘pick me boy’, according to gender—and if you’re wondering what a ‘pick me girl’ is, you won’t have to for long.

You see, a ‘pick me girl’ is someone who feeds on attention, usually from the opposite sex, and would do anything to get it, including having a fake attitude and giving you backhanded compliments. Sadly, ‘pick me girls’ are all too common, and you probably know two or three of them.

If you’re not sure how you can spot a ‘pick me girl’, though, we’ll tell you what to look for.

  • When She Gives You Insincere Flattery

We’ll call this one ‘the Regina George compliment’, as this person compliments you only to feel good about themselves. As in, comments about you being so ‘strong and brutish’ while they’re ‘weak and dainty’. Sure, the person in question may think they’re being nice, but their tone exposes them as insincere.

  • When She Only Goes Out With You If Guys Are Involved

When you call a friend, and she doesn’t have time or energy to go out, it’s normal. However, when her ‘I don’t think I can go out’ turns into an ‘I’ll join you, once guys are involved, well, that’s not a good sign. That’s a sure sign of a ‘pick me’.

  • When She Acts Fake Around Guys

We have a lot to say about this behaviour because we see it all the time—the fake loud laugh, the playing dumb, the unnatural high voice, and (worst of all) ‘accidentally’ mocking you for laughs in front of guys. If all of these things aren’t things your friend normally does and only happen when guys are around, then…you guessed it, she’s a ‘pick me girl’!

  • When She Starts Criticising You In Front of People

We don’t think anyone can stand this attitude, but ‘pick me girls’ always have it. They criticise you to appear much better in comparison, with some of the most used ‘critiques’ being things like ‘wow, you wear a lot of makeup, and I don’t wear any’ or ‘you eat very messily’. Usually, the ‘pick me girl’ will follow this brutal takedown of your character with a giggle to show that she’s ‘innocent’.

  • When She Says She’s “Not Like Other Girls”

Here’s one thing a ‘pick me’ always does: She WILL mention only having guy friends and the fact that she’s ‘not like other girls’. But, sometimes, she may go a mile further and tell you that she has ‘no friends’, even when she does!
