How often have we desired with all our hearts that the couples from the movies we love were actually couples in real life? Well, some on-screen couples from Egyptian cinema actually were! Though we adore watching them together in movies, we also empathise with their off-screen love stories. So, let us admire those on-screen-turned-real couples together.

1-     Omar El-Sherif and Faten Hamama

It all started in 1954 when Omar Sherif and Faten Hamama met on the film set of Sera’a Fel Wady. At that time, Faten Hamama was a superstar who was going through the process of divorcing her husband, film director Ezz Eldin Zulfikar.

While shooting Sera’a Fel Wady, Hamama and El Sherif were brought closer together, making it only a matter of time before they fell in love! In fact, Omar El Sherif’s deep love for Faten Hamama made him convert to Islam immediately after the film. Naturally, the film’s love story continued off-screen, culminating in a 15-year marriage.

Unsurprisingly, their great chemistry on-stage eventually led them to form a relationship, with El-Mohandes proposing to her mid-scene in one of their plays. Theirs was one of the most well-known marriages in Egypt’s entertainment industry.

For 20 years, they were as inseparable on stage and on television as they were in real life, presenting many great works together, such as Sayedty El Gamila, Motarda Gharameya, Ana w Howa w Heya, and many more.

5-     Nour El-Sherif and Poussy

Poussy first piqued Nour El Sherif’s interest in the TV show El Qahera Wel Nas. Following their stint on said show, the pair married in 1972 and made a couple of films together, with their most known films being Habeeby Da’eman and El-A’ashekan. Both actors had a loving marriage until 2006, when they divorced, though the divorce didn’t last for long.

After nine years of separation, Poussy went back to Nour El Sherif, whose health was rapidly declining. The couple didn’t have much time, though, as El Sherif passed only a few months after he reunited with his wife. Even after all this time, we’re still moved by this couple’s unwavering love.
