We’re all familiar with certain sports in Egypt and their leagues, especially football, handball, and squash. However, there are other sports in Egypt that people don’t pay that much attention to. These sports and their players aren’t achieving recognition for their efforts, which they really deserve. We’ll tell you briefly about them and guide you through what they’re about.

  1. American Football

We’re sure you have seen it in American movies but aren’t sure if we play it in Egypt or not. Well, years ago, American Football first started at Wadi Degla Club. It didn’t have that much recognition back then, but today the game is growing, and its federation, the Egyptian Federation of American Football, was formed a couple of years ago.

It is played in two versions here. Men play tackle football, while women play flag football. The Egyptian League is played every year, with eight teams competing against each other. The teams are AUC Titans, Cairo Bears, Cairo Hellhounds, Cairo Warriors, Cairo Wolves, Gezira Thunder, Eagles Athletic Club, and MSA Tigers.

If you want to have a look at their videos and find out more, visit the federation’s Facebook page.

  1. Baseball

Because Baseball is Egypt’s foundational group for baseball, and they are working on bringing the game back to Egypt. As you read, you might wonder when baseball has ever existed in Egypt, right? Well, here’s the story. Since Egypt is known for its mesmerising civilisation, a historical record (from tombs and temples in the south of Egypt) indicate that baseball may have a precursor in ancient times, where reliefs show pharaohs holding what appear to be bats and balls.

Although now there is an Egyptian baseball recreational league for kids, Because Baseball is working hard on expanding the game. You can check the whole story on the website.

  1. Hockey

You may have heard of speed skating in Egypt, but ice hockey? That’s a different surprise. Here’s another surprising fact; there is an Egyptian national ice hockey team for men. Although the sport is still working on forming a federation, it needs recognition for its efforts. Located in Nasr City, Genena Mall hosted a hockey tournament, and Louis Dumas, Canada’s Ambassador to Egypt, launched the very first Egypt Ice Hockey Experience 2021.

You might be wondering if any authority supported them. Yes, they were! The Egypt Ice Hockey Experience was hosted under the patronage of the Ministry of Youth & Sports, and in partnership with the Egyptian Tourism Authority and the Egyptian Olympic Committee.

Go ahead and check the tournament’s photos on Egypt Ice Hockey on Facebook.

  1. Rugby

Many people get confused when trying to differentiate between American football and rugby, and we can’t really blame them. However, they are two different sports, and each has its own federation. Rugby is considered among the top ten famous sports in the world! It’s mainly played in Europe and the southern hemisphere (South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, etc.), yet the Egyptian team is participating in a championship held this December in Alexandria.

Six men’s teams will compete in the tournament: Egypt, Tunisia, Senegal, Algeria, Libya, and Mauritania. While five women’s teams from Egypt, Senegal, Algeria, Libya, and Mauritania, are set to participate.

Check the Facebook page and read all about this fantastic sport!
