Since the sugar shortage began, people have been getting their knickers in a twist—but not for the right reasons. What everyone seems most concerned about, is not being able to sweeten their tea and coffee. However, the problem runs so much deeper than that. Though there are obvious knock-on effects, there are also a number of foods that you may not realise contain high amounts of sugar; that is, foods that we will soon see disappear off the shelves if the crisis continues.
Bread
And no, this is not just the pre-packaged kind—even Fino contains sugar.
Yoghurt
Flavoured yoghurts contain between 19-30 grams of sugar. That’s as much as a Twinkie!
Pepsi
This goes for other sodas as well. So if you were planning on getting your caffeine fix from this source since you can’t sweeten your coffee, think again.
Juice
Even homemade natural juices have added sugar, but more importantly, so do the store-bought kind.
Hot Dogs
Yes, you read that correctly. No more sugar means no more hot dogs.
Ketchup/Mustard/Mayonnaise
Even if you could have hot dogs, you would have to forgo condiments, as they are extremely high in sugar content, and thus won’t be available.
Pasta sauce
You’re going to have to get used to having your ‘macarona’ dry.
Dressing/Sauce
Same goes with your sandwiches—dry.
Chicken/Meat/Vegetable Stock
Believe it or not, stock cubes have 17 grams of sugar in them.
Milk
Both whole and skimmed milk contain 5 grams of sugar. Imagine your life without milk.
Crackers
It’s not just salt they’re loaded with.
Canned Goods
This goes for fruits (e.g. peaches, pineapple), veggies (e.g. sweet corn) and beans.
Chewing Gum
The answer to ‘ma3ak leban?’ will always be ‘no’.
Coleslaw
This won’t be an option at salad bars anymore once sugar is truly scarce.
Cheese
‘Gebna beida’ contains around 2.7 grams of sugar. Doesn’t sound like much, but if there is no sugar, there is no cheese.
Biscuits
Oh, well. They stopped importing McVities anyway.
Cappuccino Sachets
No sugar for your coffee, and no Nescafe` either.
Potato Chips
Egypt’s favourite snack contains around 14 grams of sugar per 7oz bag.
You have been warned. Stock up on these items while you can!
