Every Ramadan, we worry about what we’re going to eat, especially since Iftar is a pretty important occasion every single day. We’re positive that if you visit any random Egyptian household on the first day of Ramadan, you’ll find the dishes we’re talking about, even if they’re not all present. So, read on to see the meals that you’ll find on your dining table once the holy month begins!

1- A Festival of Mahshy Dishes

via seriouseats

You will DEFINITELY have mahshy on the first day of Ramadan. There’s just no way around it—it’s tradition! The best thing is there won’t be just one kind of mahshy present, as you’ll likely find wara’ enab (AKA vine leaves), squash, eggplants, and bell peppers (and we are not one bit annoyed with this festival of mahshy)!.

2- Molokhia and Rice

via shopcheapsonline

We feel like molokhia and rice are partners in crime—they’re just always together, which is lucky for us as we absolutely love them! And we don’t think anyone dislikes this yummy combo either, which is why it HAS to be on the dining table.

3- Ro’aa’

via aklsehy

We don’t know what Ro’aa’ is made of exactly, but it works so well with minced meat. The dish just has that crunch that makes your mouth water even more than it already is while you’re eating it. It’s no wonder that this delicacy is always present for gatherings.

4- Chicken Cream Soup

via bestrecipes

It doesn’t matter if you want to have soup or not. And it doesn’t even matter if you think soup might not make it to your relatives’ or your mom’s menu for the day; the chicken cream soup will always be there. What’s a Ramadan Iftar without filling your tummy with soup first?

5- Chicken Panee

Chicken Panee (AKA breaded chicken) has to be present, whether we like it or not. And we’re grateful for its presence because we find ourselves halfway through the dish the second the Maghrib Prayers are heard. Honestly speaking, this is just as essential to our tables as mahshy dishes are—there, we said it!

6- Potato Dishes of Any Kind

via spainonafork

Potatoes are the accessory of any Ramadan dining table, for a good reason. It simply elevates other ‘ozooma foods because potatoes, in their many shapes and forms, are life—everyone loves them, no matter the dish they’re in!

7- Duck

So, this dish is a little controversial. Even though you don’t have to like it (and it’s not our personal favourite, if we’re being honest), many Egyptian families just can’t go without having a duck dish present on their first Iftar table. And it’s a respectable choice, obviously!
