oh yes! oh yes! Dj Anjelo and the Villa Mercedes team are coming back to Tamarai, and oh we love having them here!!! and oh boy are the GREEKS ~~HOT~~, I mean Super HOT. (Ladies, check picture below of Anjelo below)

So when are they are coming? Tuesday the 28th of May, so if you had any plans, Trust me on this, CANCEL THEM. Becuase with Fishie’s honor this is a party that you do NOT wanna miss. As when the GREEK Comes, so does the gods of music, dance, happiness, and everything that is hot!

If you have a memory like mine you would know what exactly i am talking about, the shows, the music, the vibe, the atmosphere of when the greek comes is like no other that descends on Cairo.

When you think of a dj, I use to personally think how hard could it be, I mean seriously how hard is it press play cue, then use some automated software to do a beat match and done a DJ is born, all that is missing is just him having a good PR Agent. But apparently I am wrong there is more to being a DJ than cue and cross faders. So i caught up with Ahmed Fahmy of electrum records, one of the judges in Student DJ battles and a producer himself to see what he look at into djs.

1. What separates a good dj from a great dj?

A good DJ will master all the mxing basics, beat-matching, smooth, seamless mixing, a great DJ will

1- set and engage the with crowd different moods during tne course of his set and is able to take the crowd in and out the moods wihtout loosing them,

2- create unique moments during his set, using effects and other elements, always surprise the crowd with unique drops and breakdowns accepalla mashes, shuld have his own arsenal of reworked tracks, bootlegs and samples that are unique to him , he also should be a creative mixer, which is basically using the effects at the right time, some scratching & looping.

2. When you are judged the competitors, what were you judging based, how were you assigning the points?

We have 6 criteria on which we base our verdict:

1- track selection,

2- confidence,

3- charisma,

4- beat matching and mixing,

5- creativity,

6- crowd engagement.

3. In the competition there is a rule of no samples, no auto sync, etc, so it ensures that the DJ would be fully capable of mixing etc. But what about outside of the competition, if one dj uses auto sync, and another uses manual, how can one as a regular know the difference, does it end up boiling down to song selection?

We don’t allow auto mixing because beat matching this is the most basic skill that we need our DJs to master, after all technology is not always perfect and a DJ will have to rely on basic mixing techniques in specific situations during his set, we allow samples if it is used creatively to enhance the set. Generally, in real situations there is no harm in using the auto sync funcions in the new pioneer nexus series or on computer based systems such as traktor however, this presents a new challenge to the DJ who is using this funcion,using auto sync functions should enable a DJ to use other creative skills such the use of effects, looping ..etc since his hands and mind are free to concentrate on being creative in mixing.

4. A question outside of the competition, in the coming summer where do you expect the music scene in Egypt to head towards, in winter it seem it took a quiet steep turn to DEEP house, do you think summer will still be in that direction or we would see a change?

Generally there are always one or two tracks that hit big during the summer and sort of define the sound of that summer. I don’t think any will be on the deep side since summer anthems are always faster and bigger in sound than Deep. I perosnally like deep since it exhibits some sort of musicianship that is not present in other genres, there are real composition lines, real instruments and melodies. I see that generally deep house is moving towards the NU Disco/IIndie dance genre since is is brighter and higher in energy.

Alexandrines vs. Cairines

The Age old question what is the different between Alexandrines & Cairines. Well I asked a few people that question on who do they think is better, and why but before I get into their answers, I would like to share my point of view.

Alexandria is a smaller city, everyone knows everyone. Cairo is a mega city with population of 22 Million by Day and 18 Million by night, each district is its own city for example Zamalek is a city, Heliopolis is a city and so is Maadi. So due to the Nature of the two different cities, you would find the Alexandrines more tight together, they are like a brotherhood or one big happy family stuck together, they sometimes hate on each other as any family, but at the end of the day love each-other always. Cairines on the other hand, that sense of family in my opinion is lacked, like you have a group of friends who go with each other to school and those are a family, but thats about the whole city lacks a fabric. Also due to the small nature of Alexandria, you would find its people with more Morals and ethics, not out of anything other than fear, if they do anything wrong it would be found immediately.

Anyway that is just my personal opinion here is what others had to say

Alexandrians are cool by nature…imagine yourself being next to a beach on daily basis since you were born…that’s literally your life ..and even though I can understand when they say it’s a bit boring that they are limited in what their city has to offer and the social scene and all but I think this somehow gave them an extra excitement and appreciation of any place or party happening in cairo…so they are always fun to be around!! Plus and I have experienced this first hand they are definitely party people ..the Greek factor and it’s remaining generation formed a very different and close community ( think Christina agamy , in winter, Tijuana karaoke Sundays where they gather and sing their hearts out) they definitely are fun. - Sherif Nour E Din - TV Presenter at NTN

Student DJ Battle 3: Artificial Animals Vs Jo El Ahwal

So next battle in the Student DJ competition is to take place on Thursday, headlining it would be my EMPEROR of house & funk Aly B and warm up by Hassan Abu Allam or as I like to call him, MAGIC HANDS, seriously you will understand what i mean when you see him mixing live those hands moves at the speed of light.

now behind every battle is a story and

here is the story of Artificial Animals,

They are both from Alexandria, they new each-other before the camp and they entered the camp as two separate people, but they graduated it as one duo, who rumors says they are twins from another mother. Their sound is unique in its own right, something crazy like this… oh and i heard they put on quiet a show when they play, so make sure you come to this battle early to check it out.

Joe Al Ahwal on the other hand, I hear a lot of rumours of how much a good mixer he is, we also hear that has this talent of connecting with the audience, and since he is a good mixologest he has that supper talent where hw would be able to shift from House to Deep in under 4 seconds ( i am referring obviously hear to a lambo from 0 to a 100 in under 4 seconds)

So mark you calendar Thursday 23rd of May for another exciting battle and too see the debut of the next two hot talents to unleashed on our scene.

SHIVERs: An Ode to Vodka

As you know every thursday, Alchemy has a night dedicated to the liquor spirits. I have attended Its Tequila dedication, and their Margarita.

We sat in a tranquil golden rooms, with the spirit masks hung on the walls over looking our drinking habbits, ensuring that we are quiet intoxicated, if we werent the spirits would then pass out some of its potions to ensure that we are.

Well considering the SOARING heat! that has befallen the city, Alchemy is doing a night of SHIVERs, where it would be golden room would be set to cold, and the only way to warm up your body is like what the russians do. VODKA.

So this thursday is dedicated to the VODKA! and I cant wait to see what they have distilled for us.

The news that “The three policemen and four soldiers were captured while travelling in minibuses in northern Sinai, east of the city of El Arish.” broke 3 days ago.

The next day, which was yesterday I kid you not I read on the news, that Morsi was negotiating the return of the soliders using Muslim Brother hood channels. The day after I read a statement saying Morsi says both the lives of the kidnappers and kidnappees are important. Then i read that Sisi, will not be soft and doesnt agree with Morsi’s strategy, Then today a statement came up from the presidential office saying that no one has been assigned to negotiate with the kidnappers, that the Army, Presidency & Interior Ministry are one hand. *Side note: BULL FUCKING CRAP.

As sources in Masry Al Ayoum have said that a conversation between Army officials during a negitation saying, Either Morsi steps in and be a president that he is suppose to be or either he leaves

“وأكدت المصادر، نقلاً عن أحد الذين حضروا الاجتماع، أن ممثل القوات المسلحة انفعل بشدة قائلاً: «يا مرسي يبقى رئيس بجد يا يقدم استقالته، ولو هو مش قادر يتحمل المسؤولية يمشي وييجى غيره»، مما أثار غضب ممثلى حزب الحرية والعدالة، الذين حضروا الاجتماع، وردوا عليه قائلين «اتكلم بأدب عن رئيس الجمهورية، عيب تقول الكلام ده»، فرد ممثل الجيش «العيب هو اللي بيعمله رئيس الدولة، لما يوعد إرهابيين وقتلة بالإفراج عنهم، ولما يدفع الجيش للتفاوض مع مجرمين دي تبقى إهانة وذل»، بحسب المصادر.“

All this bullshit aside, the fact remains 3 nights have passed and 3 policemen & 4 soliders remained kidnapped and held at ransom, until the egyptian government free the kidnappers fellow comrades from jail, or something like that ( I am not quiet sure of this detail)

I would love to know what would have been the reaction of the Obama, if something like that happened, hell I believe a lot of countries went to war for far less. What would have the Turkish PM done if Kurds kidnapped his Turk soliders?

This situation just highlighted even more how weak Morsi is in responding to such threats.
